A Blog by Elliott - A 3rd Year University of Chester student Course Start Tips

So what did I need when a started University?
Here are a few tips of items I think you will need when starting your course.

Here are a few tips of items I think you will need when starting your course.

  • A notepad.
  • Pens.
  • Ruler.
  • Highlighters.
  • Pencil.

Course dependant:

  • Calculator.
  • Squared paper.
  • Laptop.
  • Memory stick.

All these will be very useful for note taking and highlighting give-outs.

Another key thing you'll need to know is that the early classes are some of the most important, you'll form friendships with course mates and a relationship with the lecturer so ensure you go to all of these lectures.

The final thing I recommend is you try and read ahead of the lecture you are going to, this will mean the things you learn in the lecture will make more sense and means the questions you ask in the lecture are well stated and you will receive more from the lecture itself.

Societies:

Joining a society could not be easier, there will be plenty of freshers events that will have society members recruiting, you can join there and then go to a taster session; following on from that you can join a sports club, there is always a lot on offer:

  • Football
  • Lacrosse
  • Basketball
  • Even quidditch!

The options are endless, even if there isn't a society for your interests find a couple of other people and make one, just go to the SU and you can get it made.

Societies aren't just for some rest bite from the university work, you'll be making friends for life; that's what university is really for

Studying:

Some studying tips

I've grown to use over my years here at University. First, I would like to clarify that these tips might work for me however they may not work for you so don't be disheartened if this is the case.

Tip 1

Music - I love studying to music, for me any music can work but if I were to recommend something to someone either smooth jazz or some classical always goes well.

Tip 2

Use a folder instead of exercise books to document your work, it means you have all of your study material in one place, not only that one folder is far cheaper than a book.

Tip 3

My final nugget of knowledge for you is to do with how you take notes in lectures, be sure to lay out your notes in an easy read fashion and only take down key information, you can fill the notes out after the lecture in your own time by watching the lecture over.
